About me

Hello, I'm Liz and all my items are designed and handmade by me. I work from my home in a beautiful village called Meopham in Kent. My inspiration is wildlife, birds and my own imagination; I'm learning new things all the time.

I was inspired to set up Big Bird, Little Bird after my sister Helen, who made bears to raise money for charity, passed away in Aug 2011 from bowel cancer. Helen gave me her sewing machine, which I still use today and so it is my ongoing connection to her.

Why the name? Helen's nickname was Big Bird (eldest daughter) and she called me and my twin Little Bird.

Prior to setting up Big Bird, Little Bird I never did much sewing beyond what I did at school some 30-odd years ago (yikes, how time flies!). I used to do graphic design before I had children and have always loved being creative. When Helen gave me her sewing machine when she could no longer sew or knit, I received a huge amount of fabric from her too. The fabric I use is a mix between what Helen gave me, vintage fabric, and new fabric including Liberty and Alexander Henry.

Each piece I make is unique; no two are the same.

In Helen's memory I make a discretionary donation from my sales to various cancer related charities and hospices.
